From The Indianapolis News, Wednesday, June 14, 1922: The Indianapolis Federation of Clubs presented a resolution to the Marion County commissioners recommending extending the facilities at Sunnyside Tuberculosis Hospital for caring and treating colored tubercular persons both to safeguard the city and as a humanitarian policy. An investigation showed the greater number of tuberculosis cases come from congested colored districts in Indianapolis. The Marion County Tuberculosis Society has called caring for incurable tubercular colored people as the city’s greatest social need. The public schools have a large number of colored children in incipient stages of tuberculosis due to congested housing conditions. Sunnyside’s superintendent said there are eleven colored and 114 white patients in the institution. The matter of providing care for more colored patients has confronted authorities for some time. The facilities for caring for white patients are not adequate.
