From The Indianapolis News, Monday, May 29, 1922: The first mail into Indianapolis by air arrived at the Indianapolis Aero Club’s flying field, eight miles east of the city along the National Road, at 12:36 p.m. this afternoon. A fleet of eight government air mail planes carrying 260 pounds of mail from Chicago made the 180-mile direct air route in one hour, ten minutes, and twenty-two seconds. Indianapolis postmaster Robert Bryson was at the field to meet the mail-carrying planes. After the mail pouches were transferred to a waiting truck, the postmaster led the way into the city, riding in the race car that won the 1912 speedway race and driven by winner Joe Dawson. The mail was distributed in the normal afternoon delivery. The air mail delivery was one of the features of the Aero Club’s Aviation day celebration.
