Kicking Off May With the Arts

The month of May in Indianapolis is always exciting as the city welcomes race fans from all over the world to our fair city. Creatives in Indianapolis also celebrate May this year with artistic expression, kicking off with First Friday, May 6 from 6-9 p.m.
The Harrison Center will host a gallery opening featured “Victory Lap” by Israel Solomon in the Harrison Gallery. There will be a group exhibition in the Underground Gallery celebrating bicycles — and an opportunity to register to bike to the Indy 500. They are also kicking off the 500 Spectacle of Homes Porch Party, encouraging residents to host their own porch parties by offering free decorating kits and prizes. While you’re there, check out aerial performances by Suspended Animation Aerials, a 500-themed fashion show, booths featuring organizations, the Herron High School Dancers Spring Showcase performers, and lots of race-related activities. The Harrison Center is located at 1505 N. Delaware, on the corner of E. 16th St.
Also on First Friday, the Circle City Industrial Complex will host its in-person open house in the 500,000 square foot building. They will feature “Two Heads are Better Than None” on the second floor of the North Studios, with large-scale works from Cindy Wingo of Wingo Studio and Bruce Dean of Bruce Dean Creative. Other studios will be open throughout the complex, including Circle City Metalworks, Martha Nahrwold’s Five Seasons Studio, Glass Arts Indiana, HI Print Gallery, Nancy Lee Designs jewelry,  and many others. Over 100 artists are in the complex, located at 1125 Brookside Ave. The complex also hosts several art-supporting businesses, including 8th Day Distillery, Centerpoint Brewery, New Day Meadery, Lick Ice Cream, Dance Kaleidiscope, and The Fowling Warehouse.
The Indy Walls Grand Opening will be held from 6 p.m. to midnight. It will be held at the former American Tent & Awning Building at 205 East Palmer St. This is an exciting new space for creatives on the south side.
Irvington will host First Friday Music from 7-9 p.m. at the Irving Theater, 5505 E. Washington St. with the JC Clements Band, Bob Palindrome, Delta Duo and DnA. Hampton Designs features lots of local artists, including Indie Art Pharmacy and Lakin Denise Henderson.
In Fountain Square, the Murphy Arts building will be open, with several studios and music in the square. The Murphy is located at Virginia and Shelby streets.
