From The Indianapolis News, Wednesday, February 8, 1922: Five pneumonia deaths and one influenza death have occurred in the last twenty-four hours according to Dr. Herman Morgan, secretary of the Indianapolis public health department. He further stated that with forty-five pneumonia and influenza deaths having been recorded in the last eight days, “Every precaution should be taken by persons suffering with mild forms of influenza or severe colds, as the pneumonia rate has not yet reached its peak.” Dr. Morgan issued warnings for homes and public buildings to be kept well ventilated as an important means of fighting respiratory infections that often lead to pneumonia. Dr. Morgan reported the crowded conditions at City Hospital are due to the prevalence of respiratory illness. There are more than 360 patients now, 121 more than the average number of patients for last year.
