Applause!: Jan. 21-27

• Sad to see Edward’s Drive-In, a southside icon, close after 64 years in business. The owners cited increased stresses from the ongoing pandemic as the main reason to decide to close the doors. They will, however, continue the Dashboard Diner food truck, so keep an eye open for them. The owners will be holding an auction of items from the restaurant at a later date.
• “Broom Guy” Jim Richter, who is a frequent visitor to the east side with his wonderful brooms, recently lost his wife Kathy. He is in need of assistance with medical and funeral expenses and has set up a Go Fund Me campaign. Go to gofundme.com and search for his name to donate. Or, the next time you see him, buy a broom.
• Lately there have been several red fox sightings on the east side, focused around Irvington and near the creeks. According to the Canid Project, red foxes hunt small prey like mice, rats, squirrels, and birds and scavenge roadkill and trash. They have territories that they roam, and our urban environment provides them with enough resources that they are unlikely to hurt your pets, but they are likely to come after your chickens. Foxes have their babies and “den” February through July. Leave them alone and they’ll leave you alone. For more information about these remarkable (and beautiful) animals, visit thecanidproject.com
