With Carson Wentz being out for at least half the season, there has been much media and fan concern about who was going to take the snaps and be the starting quarterback when the regular season began. There was an untested second year man in Jacob Eason and a rookie named Sam Ehlinger. Both are fourth round drafts and neither had taken a snap in a game. Eason was taking the first team snaps but Ehlinger was showing a strong arm and quick feet. Mind you, Carson Wentz is still the top quarterback, but the team is in an emergency mode. Injuries have hit the Colts hard in training camp with players such as Quenton Nelson, DeForest Buckner, and Braden Smith out with foot injuries.
Last Sunday the Colts met the Jaguars at Lucas Oil for their first preseason game. The two teams had a joint week of practice the week before. To make a long story short the Colts won 21-18. Okay, it is preseason and half of the players that were on the field for both teams won’t be with them when the season starts. You might say that the Colts third teamers were better than the Jag third teamers.
However, the good news was the play of George Eason. He showed poise and confidence, a strong arm and good decision making. Ehlinger too, had some impressive moments but his inexperience showed. But with Frank Reich teaching him he will get over that. There are two preseason games left and of course we hope that the two signal callers continue to make progress.
Tim Tebow, the former Heisman Trophy winning quarterback, had been trying out as a tight end for the Jags. He was released after the game was over.
