Applause!: July 9-15

• The Irvington community came out for a water gun fight on Saturday, July 3 at Ellenberger Park to celebrate Independence Day. Dozens of kids and adults had a grand time filling up super-soakers and water pistols, thanks to Indianapolis Fire Department water tanks. The Friends of Ellenberger Park organization spearheaded the effort, which we hope could become a new tradition in the neighborhood!
• Neighborhood registration for the 2021 National Night Out events on Aug. 3 are being taken by Steve Talley of East District IMPD. E-mail him at Steve.Talley@indy.gov for more information on how to register your neighborhood cookout or block party to help fight crime in our neighborhoods. Deadline for registration is July 27. • There will be a public open house to discuss the Near Eastside Streetscape proposed for 10th and Rural on Wednesday, July 13 from 4-7 p.m. in the parking lot at 10th St. and Hamilton. Participants will be able to take a look at the proposed project and make public comments.
• Robert Hunt’s artwork will be featured in July at the Hancock County Arts Center, locate at the 20 North Gallery, 20 North State St. There will be a reception and open house on Friday, July 9 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
• Mt. Comfort Rd. will be closed between 300N and 400N until late fall. They are constructing an underground stormwater detention system. Follow the detour signs.
• The White River Alliance, in partnership with the White River Vision Plan, is placing 10 art canoes in key anchor locations along the White River in an effort to raise awareness of recent (and future) reinvestment in Indianapolis’ waterways. Each of the canoes will be painted by a different local artist from Marion County or Hamilton County. The canoes will be installed July 12-13 and on display through October, with five canoes located in Marion County and the other five in Hamilton County. Check them out close by at Broad Ripple Park, White River State Park, and Belmont Beach (near west side on N. White River Parkway).
• The Irvington Farmers Market will be held Sunday, July 11 from noon-3 p.m. at Ellenberger Park, 5301 E. St. Clair. Expect lots of fresh produce, local foods, and much more.
• Vintage Movie Night at Garfield Park continues Saturday, July 10 at 9 p.m. in the Corporate Shelter outdoors. This month features The Maze (1953). Tickets are $5 per person. Visit gpacarts.org for more information and reserve tickets online.
• Newfields, 4000 N. Michigan Rd., opens the exhibit The Lume, a multi-sensory art experience, where the audience is surrounded by significant pieces of art (such as Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”). Tickets are $25 for non-members for the show alone. Admission to Newfields is $18 for adults. Visit discovernewfields.org for more information about The Lume.
• Kent Robinson, via the Web, will present a virtual educational seminar on the topic “How to Succeed in Tracking Down Your German Ancestors – Beginning German Research” on Saturday, July 10 at 1 p.m. at the Bona Thompson Memorial Center, 5350 E. University Ave. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. Admission is free.
