Mike Woodson Leads the Hoosiers

Indiana University has called one of its true sons home. Mike Woodson will lead the Hoosier roundballers starting this fall. His college coach Bob Knight said “He will do an excellent job. He is a great man.”
Woodson is a true Hoosier. Born in Indianapolis on March 24, 1958, he played high school ball at Broad Ripple. Woodson attended IU from 1976-1980. He was a second team All-American in 1980. In the 1980 NBA Draft Woodson was selected 12th by the New York Knicks. He was traded to the New Jersey Nets in 1982. He spent time with the Sacramento Kings, the Los Angeles Clippers, the Houston Rockets, and the Cleveland Cavaliers. He retired as a player in 1991.
As a coach Woodson started working with the Milwaukee Bucks, the Cavaliers, the 76ers, and the Detroit Pistons. He became known for developing strong, effective defenses. In 2004 he was hired as the Head Coach of the Atlanta Hawks where his six year regular season record was 206-214. His team went to the semi-finals twice. He was not re-signed as head coach after the 2010 season. Woodson joined the Knicks as an assistant in 2011 and was appointed Head Coach in 2012. His two and a half year record was 109-79. Woodson joined the Clippers coaching staff in 2014 and was there through 2018. He rejoined the Knicks as an assistant in 2020.
Mike Woodson’s coaching experience has been at the pro level but returning home to Indiana should work well for him. Welcome home Mike and best of luck to you.
