Community Garden Expands in Food Desert

INDIANAPOLIS — The American Heart Association recently broke ground on an expanded community garden at 20th and Hillside. There has been a garden there for over 80  years, but the property owner planned to expand it to create more opportunities to grow fresh food for the community, which is in the middle of a food desert.
The finished garden will be 10,000 square feet and include a storage shed, and raised beds.
The Indianapolis chapter of the American Heart Association has worked for several years with neighborhoods across the city to help start community gardens to increase access to healthy food choices.
