Applause!: Oct. 2-8

• Lots of good things happening along East 10th Street. On Sept. 25, the Vining Gallery held a grand opening at 2620 E. 10th St., featuring 40 renowned representational painters from across the U.S. The show will run through Oct. 29. Justin’s work is outstanding and he has a keen eye for talent. Visit his Web site, vininggallery.com for more information about gallery hours. You might also want to check out the Justin Brown art exhibit at the 10 East location. 2301 E. 10th St., during select hours. While you’re over there, check out good eats at the Tick Tock Lounge, Mayfair Taproom, 18th Street Indy, Healthy Harvest Market, 10th St. Diner, Chuck’s Coney Island (Detroit style coney dogs!), and many more. Shopping options include Audrey’s and Tim & Julie’s Another Fine Mess. In order for these places to succeed, we must support them!
• Seems like Indianapolis is experiencing an uptick in late night drag racing. Broad Ripple residents have reported dozens of motorcycles “parading” at high speeds through the main drag, blocking intersections, and generally creating a nuisance after the bars have closed. Recently, Irvington residents complained about cars “burning out” on East Washington Street, creating smoke and haze. If you see this kind of behavior, IMPD needs to be made aware of the foolishness before someone gets hurt. Call the non-emergency number at 317-327-3811.
•  Pauline Moffat has stepped down as CEO of IndyFringe, and has handed the baton off to Justin Brady, who was their first ever Festival intern. They are working together so the transition will be complete by December. Pauline will still be around, working with the District Theatre (formerly Theater on the Square) to help plan for the future of more independent theater in Indy.
• Congratulations to local recipients of awards from the American Institute of Architects Indiana! Schmidt Associates won a Merit Award in Preservation/Adaptive Reuse on the P.R. Mallory campus on East Washington St. for Paramount School and Purdue Polytechnic High School. One 10 Studio received two awards: a Citation Award for the Shoemaker residents in Fletcher Place, and the Highland House in Indianapolis.
• First Friday is upon us on Oct. 2, and galleries and creative communities really need everyone’s support right now! The Beech Grove Artist Collective will hold its last large outdoor First Friday from 5:30-9:00 p.m. along Main St. Check out the studios, pubs, breweries, and vintage shops from the 300-700 block of Main St. in Beech Grove. In addition, Circle City Industrial Complex (1125 Brookside Ave.) will have open studios inside, plus businesses will be open. The Harrison Center at the corner of Delaware and 16th will be hopping with open studios and ArtMix will be celebrating October’s Disability Employment Month.
