Long Return to “Normal”

As summer looms ahead, sports fans and everyone else for that matter are impatiently waiting for a return to the normal sporting activities of warm weather. June 1st seems to be the target date that most sports activities are using as their return to regular schedule. The NFL has named that date as the day all team facilities across the nation will be permitted to reopen.
However, today, Tuesday May 19, several teams including the Colts have been given the OK to open their practice facilities, under strict safety guidelines of course. So the team’s training facilities in Westfield will be open, but not to the public. Several other NFL teams are opening today and a few more by the end of the week. Let’s hope things go well and we can get back to enjoying the summer — and some sports.

NASCAR Boys are Back

The first major American sporting event to occur since the pandemic lockdown was the running of last Sunday at the Darlington Speedway for the Real Heroes 400 in the Cup series. It also marked the return to racing of Ryan Newman since his near fatal accident at Daytona. The stands were empty of fans but the racing was hot and most everyone was glad to be up and competing again. Almost lost in all the excitement was the race-winning drive by Kevin Harvick. Harvick claimed his 50th career victory and his 2nd Darlington win. Alex Bowman finished in 2nd place. Joey Logano who won the pole finished 13th. Logano still holds the Cup series point lead.
The Toyota XFinity 500 at Darlington was held Tuesday the 19th at 6 p.m. and the Coca Cola 600 will be this coming Sunday at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. So the 2020 NASCAR is back on track.

IndyCar Season

The first IndyCar race of the 2020 season is looming on the horizon. The boys will begin the 2020 series at the Texas Motor Speedway on June 6th for the Genesys 300. There will be no fans in the stands, but the race will be televised. The usual suspects will be there with a few new faces. So maybe things are getting back to normal. Let’s hope.
