Applause!: Oct. 18-24

• The Irvington Artists Show and Founders Award Presentation will be held on Sunday, Oct. 20 from 2-4 p.m. at the Bona Thompson Memorial Center. Everyone is welcome to see local art, and stay for the presentation of awards that recognize individuals, organizations, and businesses that contribute to the overall quality of Irvington. This year’s recipients are the Weekly View (Paula Nicewanger, Judy Crawford and Ethel Winslow), Jan Deferbrache of the Magic Candle and executive director of Gaia Works, Kent Hankins and Bill Aughe, community activists, and Mike and Mary Spilbeler (community activists and owners of the Irvington Picture Frame Company).
• The Town of Cumberland recently received high-speed fiber optics from NineStar Connect. The town hall and other facilities have 1Gb connectivity, and there are plans for other businesses in the area to get the same fiber access. This is a big technology leap forward for the area, which hopes to attract more tech-heavy businesses along the Mt. Comfort Corridor.
• The East 38th Street Health and Wellness Book Club will meet on Monday, Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. at the East 38th St. branch of the library to discuss “The China Study” and receive wellness tips, a healthy snack, and demo exercises. “The China Study” by Dr. T. Colin Campbell is available at the library.
• Local author Carol Sissom’s third book in the LaSalle Street Murders series is currently available at Red Dog Books in Greenwood and at the Marion County Library. If you are interested in the gruesome murders that took place on LaSalle decades ago, you’ll want to check them out.
• Eastside Creation Network is hosting the film “Courage, Brains, and Muscle” at Downey Ave. Christian Church, 111 S. Downey on Friday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. Former First Lady of Indiana Judy O’Bannon narrates the film about the environmental work being done in the state, and she will be in attendance. Admission is free.
• Congratulations to Mt. Vernon Middle School in Fortville and Perry Meridian Middle School in Indianapolis for being named Indiana Gold Star Schools for 2019 for School Counseling.
• The 63rd St. Bridge over Indian Creek has reopened in Lawrence Township. It was closed in September so that contractors could build a new concrete deck overlay. The bridge is between Sunnyside and Oaklandon roads.
• Tony Brewer will be the featured poet at the monthly Poetry at the Fort event on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 7-9 p.m. at the Theatre at the Fort, 8920 Otis Ave. in Lawrence. Everyone is invited to come out and hear him read.
• Heartland Film Festival closes on Sunday, Oct. 20, but there’s still time to see some wonderful films from all over the world. Visit heartlandfilms.org to see the schedule and set aside some time to see a movie or two!
