Applause!: Oct. 11-17

• The last Irvington Farmer’s Market of the year will be held Sunday, Oct. 13 from noon-3 p.m. at Ellenberger Park, 5301 E. St. Clair. Lots of produce will be out this time of year, with seasonal favorites like apples and squash. Also check out the local artisans who will have their autumn wares out for sale. The Irvington Garden Club has done an amazing job keeping this popular market alive and thriving over the years!
• Heartland Film Festival kicks off this weekend and runs until Oct. 20. With several venues to choose from and hundreds of films, do yourself a favor and take in one or two (or more). Visit heartlandfilm.org for schedules. Festival passes are available for non-members starting at $125 for matinees (films starting before 5 p.m.), or a full pass for $245 for regular film screenings throughout the festival. If you are a big film buff, the passes are the best value.
• The Howe Alumni Association is taking donations for its rummage sale on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the old gym at the high school. Drop off unwanted treasures on Thursday the 17th or Friday the 18th from 4-8 p.m. each night. Proceeds will go the TC Howe Alumni Association General Fund.
• All Souls Unitarian Church, 5805 E. 56th St., will host the Oratorio Society, the symphonic choir of the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. They will perform Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. The concert is free and open to the public.
• Adults are invited to bring their current knitting, crochet, beading, sewing, scrapbooking, or other craft project to Monday Night Crafts on Monday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. at the Fountain Square library branch. Fellow crafters will be there to support and encourage!
• Congratulations to Kim Brown-Harden, who has been named the new manager of the East 38th St. library branch. Kim is an east side resident, and has worked at the Indiana State Library, as well as IndyPL at Brightwood and a computer lab assistant at Central.
• Congratulations to local brewers who took home medals in the 2019 Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado. Sun King Brewery took home the most medals of any brewery in the competition, winning three gold and one silver. Four Day Ray Brewing in Fishers, Blind Owl Brewing, Chilly Water Brewing, and Metazoa Brewing Co. of Indy took home medals.
• Early voting in the 2019 election  started Tuesday, Oct. 8th for Mayor, City-County Council members in Marion County, plus Beech Grove and Lawrence. MSD of Lawrence Twp. is proposing a property tax referendums for capital projects and operating revenue. Voters in Marion County can cast ballots at the City-County Building from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays through Oct. 25 and from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Oct. 28-Nov. 1.
• Indianapolis Animal Care Services is offering free pet adoptions throughout October. The shelter, located at 2600 S. Harding St., is also offering a “Cuddle Before You Commit” program, where you can foster a pet for two weeks to decide if it is a good fit for the family. Cuddle Fosters must meet all the qualifications of an adopter, but can return the pet if things don’t work out.
