R.I.P. Dan and Keith
I was saddened this weekend by the passing of two of my all time favorite sports figures: College football announcer Keith Jackson and legendary race car driver and racing innovator Dan Gurney. Keith Jackson brought enthusiasm and knowledge to his broadcasting. When he and former Purdue and Miami Dolphin quarterback Bob Griese were in the booth covering a college football game, there was no more formidable a pair to cover the action on the field. Jackson was also the original broadcast commemorator during the first season of ABC’s Monday Night Football along with Howard Cosell and “Dandy” Don Meredith.
He had a way of making the fans feel important while calling a game. He covered Major League Baseball, boxing, the Olympics, and NASCAR but it was college football that was his forte. Keith Jackson was 89 years old and he was a Hoss, a real Hoss!
Dan Gurney was quite simply my all time hero. His accomplishments as a driver, car owner and developer, and team manager are legendary. He won the 24 Hours of Le Mans with A.J. Foyt. He won four F1 races. He won seven Indy Car races and five NASCAR races. He developed one of the most competitive race cars in open wheel racing history, the AAR Eagle. He brought Colin Chapman and the Lotus Ford to the Indianapolis 500 Mile race and in turn brought the rear engine revolution to American racing and changed it forever. Above all, he was a gentleman and a true sportsman. He brought dignity, integrity, and class to the world of competitive auto racing. He was a true hero! Dan Gurney was 86 years old.
Purdue Cheerleaders
Congratulations to the Purdue Boilermaker Cheerleaders on winning the 2017-18 National Championship in the small co-ed division at Disney World.
The Boilermakers had a low winning football team, their basketball team is currently ranked number three in the nation, and now a national championship cheerleading squad. There is a lot to be excited about in West Lafayette right now. Oh BTW, the Ball States squad finished in second place.
Josh McDaniels will be the New Horseshoe Head Man?
The word is out that the Colts are intent on hiring the Patriot’s offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as their new head coach. They can’t talk to him about it until after the Patriot’s season is over, which could be after the Super Bowl. McDaniels is credited with creating the offensive system that 40 yr. old quarterback Tom Brady is flourishing in. He is also familiar with Jacoby Brissett if it comes to that. He had one outing with the Broncos as a head coach starting in 2009 where he compiled an 11-17 record before being fired late in the 2010 season. He was also accused of taping a San Francisco 49er practice and was fined $50,000 by the NFL. The Tennessee Titans may also have an interest in McDaniels. We shall see.
