Irvington Prep Senior Walk Gets Attention

IRVINGTON — On Tues., May 23 Irvington Preparatory Academy’s Class of 2017 put on their graduate caps and gowns and walked to Irvington Community Elementary School via the Pennsy Trail then hiked over to Irvington Community Middle School on East Pleasant Run Parkway South Drive. The purpose of this landmark event was to honor the seniors’ achievement while inspiring their younger peers to academic distinction in years to come. The seniors processed through the halls of ICES and ICMS — with “Pomp and Circumstance” playing in the background — to ovations from students and staff from these respective school buildings.
A number of graduates began their educational careers with Irvington Community Schools in kindergarten, and the memories moved some of their former teachers to tears. Jennifer Roberts, ICMS 7th and 8th grade social studies teacher, said, “I couldn’t take any photos. I was too busy crying and cheering! This was an awesome bonding event for our three schools.”
One of the IPA seniors, Alex Urbanek, while giving his former teachers hugs, blurted, “Just look at me now!” The graduates-to-be also received unexpected and welcome kudos from drivers on East Washington Street and Arlington Avenue, with horns blaring, hands waving, and shouts of encouragement and congratulations. Neighbors joined in the moment, clapping from their yards as the group passed by.
