Congratulations to the Indiana University Fighting Hoosiers. They beat the Purdue Boilermakers at West Lafayette to retain possession of the Old Oaken Bucket. Carving out a 26-24 win gave them a 6-6 record for the season and a 4-4 conference record — good for fourth in the Big Eastern conference and a probably bowl bid. Congratulations to Head Coach Kevin Wilson and the IU football team.
Junior runningback Devine Redding gained 1,050 yards on 236 carries and scored 6 touchdowns for the Big Red. The 5-10 208 pounder also added 156 yards on 27 receptions for 2 touchdowns. Sophomore wide receiver Nick Westbrook led the team in receiving with 49 receptions for 915 yards and 5 touchdowns. Junior quarterback Richard Lagow led the team in passing with 239 completions on 399 attempts for 3,174 yards and 18 touchdown passes along with 16 interceptions. Lagow is from Plano, Texas and is 6’-6” and weighs 237 pounds. Junior backup quarterback Zander Diamont was the Hoosier’s running quarterback. This year running the option, Diamont gained 241 yards on 38 carries. However, the Los Angles native has suffered a number of concussions over his playing career, so after this season he will retire, saying “I need my brain.” The young man made a very wise decision and we wish him the best of luck,
The Hoosiers have qualified to play in a bowl game but which one? Most experts are pointing to the Fosters Farm Bowl in Santa Clara, California on Dec. 28.Their opponent would be either Utah (8-4) or Stanford (9-3). Neither would be a pushover. Washington State (8-4) is in the mix as well. It will be a tough game.
There is a outside chance that they could play in the Quick Lane Bowl in Detroit. They would play an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent, possibly Boston College.
Luckless Colts Lose to the Steelers . . . Again
The Colts vs. Steelers game Thanksgiving night showed Colts fans what they already knew — that with Andrew Luck they are a mediocre team but without him they are abysmal. No. 12 is still on concussion protocol but even his presence probably would not have helped the team to a win. The final score was 28-7 and the Horseshoe is lucky that it wasn’t worse. Backup quarterback Scott Tolzien played well enough, the offensive line leaked Pittsburgh pass rushers like a sieve, and Colt receivers dropped passes with maddening regularity. Steeler quarterback Ben Roethisburger had his way with the Horseshoe defense, throwing for 221 yards and 3 touchdowns all to Antonio Brown. Runningback Le’Veon Bell ripped the Colts’ front seven for 120 yards and a touchdown. Twice the offense had first and goal and came away with zero points. A sad performance. The Colts have become the Steelers’ punching bag the last several years and Big Ben always plays his best against the Colts.
Where will Romo Roam?
Long time Dallas Cowboy quarterback Tony Romo has officially acknowledged rookie sensation Dak Prescott to have earned the Cowboys starting quarterback spot. Right now Romo is listed as the backup but he has indicated that he would be set for that spot next year. So what happens to the 36-year-old injury prone signal caller? He has indicated a preference to go to the Bronco’s ala Peyton Manning and maybe resurrect his career. Denver has yet to indicate any interest in Romo and seems satisfied with it’s current quarterback situation. So where would he go? The Jets are being mentioned as are the Bears, the Bills, and the Texans as possible landing places. I am figuring the Texans. They are in the same state and they need a proven leader at quarterback. Romo’s injury history is a drawback for any team that is considering him. His age too, works against him. In my opinion, Tony Romo should retire and move on with his life. If he continues to play, his next injury could be his last.
