100 Years Ago This Week: June 17-23

From The Indianapolis News, Thursday, June 22, 1916: The Cornelia Cole Fairbanks Chapter, D. A. R. unveiled a marker at Washington Street and Southeastern Avenue in an impressive ceremony yesterday afternoon. The nearly ten foot high marker is inscribed on its west side, “This milestone marks the crossing of the National and Michigan Roads. Over these roads came many of the pioneers, who, by their courage and industry founded the great commonwealth of Indiana.” The marker’s east side commemorates Indiana’s statehood centennial and acknowledges the D. A. R. The marker’s north side is inscribed “National Road: Washington, 575 Miles;” the marker’s south side inscription reads “Michigan Road: To Madison, 95 Miles.” Mayor Joseph E. Bell gave a patriotic talk. The granddaughter of Mary S. Carey, vice-president-general, National Daughters of the American Revolution, pulled the rope unveiling the marker.
