From The Indianapolis News, Tuesday, April 25: Protesting against a break of friendly relations with Germany, German-American residents of Indianapolis, Evansville, Terre Haute and South Bend today sent a large number of telegrams to Indiana’s Congressional delegation appealing to them to do their utmost to prevent war with Germany. Coordinated by a pro-German organization in Indianapolis known informally as the Embargo League whose members have agreed not to do business with the Allies, the telegrams protest any step which might mean war with Germany. Prominent Indianapolis brewer Albert Lieber wired, “It would be a calamity for this country to go to war with Germany. Germany has always been a friendly nation. The American people do not want war.” Approximately 200 telegrams were sent from the Platt Deutsche Verein at Indianapolis to local Congressman Merrill Moores.
