INDIANAPOLIS — Every year since 2008, Frank Watson and Denise Walker Wagner have been hosting a community gathering in Indianapolis, Indiana to benefit the men living in the Duvall Men’s Work Release Center. Near East neighbors gather to sing, play music, eat, and find out what the men need: socks, hats, gloves, laundry soap, deodorant, underwear, art supplies for “Dad’s Day,” and bring those items and donate them to the center. This year, there will also be a fundraiser benefiting Homeless and ReEntry Helpers, www.indyhelpers.com/, who serve veterans, offenders, ex-offenders, seniors and the homeless, linking them with resources and jobs.
Meet neighborhood leaders, volunteers, city leaders, correction officers, neighbors and returned citizens for music and connection at the fundraiser. This year’s event will be bigger then ever, bringing in free food, free haircuts for reentry neighbors, a variety of reentry service providers, a “One Stop” for social services, live music, free ice cream, and more. Local dignitaries have been invited, including the Mayor. Scheduled speakers include Jackie Nytes, Fathers and Families, and Duvall director Dan Castillo.
The event takes place at All That Jazz and Blues Cafe and Event Center, 2127 E. 10th from 4 to 9 p.m. on Sat., April 23. The keynote speakers will present between 5:30 and 6:30, and live music will follow.
This is a family friendly event; all are welcome.
