The most goals scored by a single team in a professional hockey game was 16 by the Montreal Canadiens. The Canadiens beat the Quebec Bulldogs 16-3 on March 3, 1920. That same year the Canadiens combined with the Toronto St. Patrick’s to score the most total goals in an NHL game with 21 total goals on January 10, 1920. Montreal won the game 14-7. On December 11, 1985 the Edmonton Oilers and Chicago Blackhawks tied the record. The Oilers won 12-9. Joe Malone scored 7 goals in one game, the most ever by a single player. “Phantom Joe” scored his 7 goals playing in a game for the Quebec Bulldogs against the Toronto St. Patrick’s on January 31, 1920. 1920 seemed to be a big year for NHL scoring records.
On November 27, 1966 the Washington Redskins beat the New York Giants 72-41. The 72 points the Redskins scored was the most by a single team in an NFL game and the combined total of 113 points that both the Skins and the Giants scored was the most total points scored in an NFL game. Ernie Nevers of the Chicago Cardinals holds the record for most points scored in an NFL game with 40. Against the Chicago Bears on November 28, 1929 Nevers scored 6 touchdowns and kicked four extra points. The 6 touchdowns that Nevers scored in a single game is an NFL record that has been tied by Dub Jones of the Cleveland Browns in 1951 and Gale Sayers of the Chicago Bears in 1965.
On June 29, 1897 the Chicago Colts of the National Baseball League defeated the Louisville Colonels 36-7 to set the record for the most total points scored in a professional baseball game. The game was played at Chicago’s old West Side Ball Grounds. The Colts would go on to become the Cubs in 1907.
On September 14, 1987 the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Baltimore Orioles 18 to 2 and in doing so, as a team hit 10 home runs to set the Major League record. The Major League record for the most runs scored in a game by a single play is held by Guy Hecker, one of the great pioneers of professional baseball. Hecker was a pitcher with the Louisville Eclipse of the American Association. On August 15, 1896 the Eclipse were playing their cross town rivals, the Louisville Colonels. (Louisville always seems to name their pro sports teams the Colonels.) Hecker scored 7 runs in the game in addition to pitching to set the record. In 1884 Hecker became the only pitcher in Major League history to win a batting title. He was a great all around player.
Most sports fans know that Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in an NBA game in 1962. On March 2 of that year Wilt scored his 100 against the New York Knicks. He also became the first and only player to score more than 4,000 points in a season with 4,029 in 1962.On December 13, 1983 the Detroit Pistons beat the Denver Nuggets 186-184 in triple overtime at McNicoles Arena in Denver. The 186 points by Detroit is the most points scored by a winning team. The 184 points scored by Denver is the most points scored by a losing team. The combined total of 370 points scored by both teams is the most points scored in a NBA game. This most likely is a record that will not be broken.
Panthers Will Win the Super Bowl
Peyton Manning still has a lot of fans in Indy and I am one of them, but I’m afraid I have to go with the Carolina Panthers to beat the Denver Broncos this coming Sunday in Super Bowl 50. I’m sorry, but the Panthers are a stronger, more complete team than the Broncos. My prediction for the final score is 31-20.
Another Illusion Shattered
The Union Cycliste Internationale, the governing body of competitive bicycling, has announced that it discovered that a hidden motor was discovered in the bicycle of 19 year old cyclocross athlete Femke Van Den Driessche after the World Cycling Championships in Belgium. Ms. Van Der Driessche had been considered an up and comer in international cycling and was one of the favorites of the championship event. A judge noticed a pair of wires protruding from under her saddle in a post race inspection. The bike was seized and the motor was discovered in the crankshaft of the bike. The ill-advised young woman faces a fine of up to two hundred grand and a possible lifetime ban from cycling. And I thought that after Lance Armstrong had been caught, everything in cycling was on the up and up.
