Prescription Drug Drop Box in Jail Collecting Discarded Drugs

INDIANAPOLIS — In a partnership between the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and Drug Free Marion County that began in June of 2014, a prescription drug disposal box was placed in the public lobby of the Marion County Jail at 40 South Alabama St. Since the drop box was placed, it has collected over 565 pounds of discarded prescription drugs and medications.
The drop box project was the idea of Drug Free Marion County’s Board of Directors President, the Honorable William J. Nelson, Judge, Marion Superior Court, Criminal Division. In 2009, Judge Nelson and his wife Kristy tragically lost their son Bryan, at the age of 20, to a prescription drug overdose. This prompted Judge Nelson and his wife to become involved with Drug Free Marion County, and serve as community advocates through presentations to parents and schools.
The drop box is plainly marked and readily accessible in the lobby of the Marion County Jail, located at 40 South Alabama St. It is subject to 24 hour observation and is checked by Deputies at least once a day. Drug Free Marion County also has drop boxes located at the Lawrence Police Department (4450 McCoy St.) and the Speedway Police Department (1410 North Lynhurst Dr.).
