From The Indianapolis News, Wednesday, November 17, 1915: Practically every business house run by African-Americans in Indianapolis was closed this morning from 10:00 to 10:30 o’clock during the funeral service for Booker T. Washington. Pictures of Washington draped in the American flag and deep mourning were displayed from many business houses. In the colored public schools the morning exercise period was made a brief and impressive memorial. In a few of the schools the funeral hour was set aside for a special service. At all the colored schools flags were lowered to half mast, and pictures of Washington were placed in prominent positions. In addition to the public memorial service which is to be held at Tomlinson Hall, a number of the leading clubs in the city are arranging to hold a special meeting in memory of Mr. Washington.
