From The Indianapolis Star, Wednesday, September 29, 1915: Fountain Square Merchants Association members made a trip through the country southeast of Indianapolis yesterday boosting Fountain Square as a good place to trade. The trip was to regain some of the trade lost when roads leading into the city from the southeast were in bad condition and to gain new business. Souvenirs of kitchen utensils for the women and cigars for the men were distributed along the route. The party was divided into two groups, B. S. Gadd being captain of one and Harry P. Britan captain of the other. A cordial reception was extended to the visitors and apples, cider, buttermilk and papaws were offered by the country folk until it became embarrassing to find an excuse for refusing them. About 75 farmers and their wives were called on.
