From The Indianapolis Times, Wednesday, August 25, 1915: The death knell of the old familiar bushel basket was sounded today by the city inspector of weights and measures, when he ordered all dealers to destroy, hide or ship away this measure by Saturday morning. That’s when the new city ordinance requiring most vegetables to be sold by weight goes into effect, and the bushel basket will not be needed. The only bushel baskets to be allowed in Indianapolis are ones in which fruits or vegetables are shipped to merchants and billed out in the original package, without having been opened. Where someone wants to buy by the measure, instead of by weight, the peck or half bushel measure can be used. Even in this case the commodity must be weighed and the price based on pounds, not by measure.
