Applause!: June 26-July 3

• The Woodsong Neighborhood Association asked us for a donation of a newspaper box for their Little Free Library, and we were happy to oblige! They did a great job cleaning it up and refurbishing it for their neat little neighborhood library. Glad we could help!
• In a lead up to National HIV Testing day on June 27, The Damien Center is teaming with Walgreens and Greater Than AIDS, to encourage community members to know their HIV status and take advantage of free HIV testing at select Walgreens locations in Indianapolis during a three-day period: June 25 from 3-7 p.m., June 26 from 3-7 p.m., and June 27 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The Damien Center will provide trained counselors to conduct the testing and will provide results on-site within minutes. In addition to on-site testing at its Joseph F. Miller Testing Center at 26 N. Arsenal Ave., The Center will offer free tests at the following Walgreens Indianapolis locations: 3003 Kessler Blvd North Dr., 3205 E. Washington St., 7506 N. Shadeland Ave., 1530 N. Meridian St., 3545 W. 86th St., 342 Massachusetts Ave., #103.
• The Navistar foundry will close June 30. It was built in 1938, providing many good-paying jobs for local workers. The factory makes engine blocks and cylinder heads for trucks. The plant is located on Brookville Rd. and Ritter on the southern edge of Irvington.
• A free guidebook to help parents navigate the educational systems of Indianapolis and choose the best place to send their children to school is now available for pick-up at all Indianapolis Public Library locations. The newest edition of the Indianapolis School Chooser Guide, available in English and Spanish, profiles more than 600 public, private and charter schools, preschool through high school. Produced by GreatSchools Indianapolis in partnership with the City of Indianapolis, the resource guide includes such information as fees, key deadlines, transportation and the latest ISTEP+ results.
• The Quilters Guild of Indianapolis will have a meeting on July 9 at 7p.m. at the Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 N. Meridian St. The featured presenter will be Di Richards, the State Chaiman for the Quilts of Valor. For more information, visit www.quiltguildindy.net.
• Save the date: The Harrison Center for the Arts (1505 N. Delaware) will hold FoodConV on July 3 from 5-9 p.m. It is an unconventional convention celebrating the art and culture of food, including a variety of local food enthusiasts, growers, and much more. Learn about solar cooking, raising goats, composting, hydroponics, and all sorts of neat stuff.
• Another date to save: IMPD’s annual Community Day on the east side will be held July 15 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Brookside Family Center (Olney and Brookside Parkway S. Dr.). Meet with IMPD and other community groups for kid-friendly activities and more.
