From The Indianapolis Star, Sunday, February 21, 1915: The League of 1914, a local German-American organization, yesterday wired $25,000 (2014: $576,516.70) to the German Embassy in Washington, DC with instructions that it be transmitted to the German Red Cross to be used in caring for the widows and orphans of German soldiers who have been killed in the war. This money represents the first payment from the fund that the league is raising to help relieve the suffering in Germany resulting from the war, and additional money will be forwarded later. The League committee in charge of the funds expressed the hope that by sending the money to Germany at this time would help alleviate the spirit of bitterness being manifested in Germany toward America because of the war munitions being exported to the Allies from the United States.
