Applause!: July 18-25

• A big thank you to the “anonymous weeders” helping out at Irving Circle. You are a big help in keeping the beds beautiful.
•  Connect-2-Help reported recently they have received over 275,000 calls from Indiana residents seeking help with utilities, shelter, health care, and many other basic wants. About 18 perccent reported they had a disability that made getting help difficult, and about 14 percent report being unemployed. Sponsored by United Way, this program helps people in crisis get to needed resources. The program needs volunteers to help sustain its mission; call the 211 number to offer your assistance. If you are in need of help, please call 211 so they can help you get to the resources you need.
•  Library patrons can now access award-winning documentaries, feature films, foreign films, children’s movies and popular TV series through The Indianapolis Public Library’s virtual library at www.indypl.org.
•  The death of Officer Perry Renn cast a shadow over IMPD, causing East District to cancel their community Day. Because there is overwhelming support for East District, Commander Waters decided the best decision is to plan a reschedule for Community Day. The new date for Community Day is Wednesday July 30, from 10 a.m. -2 p.m. at Brookside Park in front of the recreation center.  Brookside Parkway S. Dr. and Olney St. Show your support for our law enforcement professionals!
•  Last week’s story about Eric Grayson’s story is pretty timely. He just received a National Film Preservation Foundation to restore another chapter of the 10-chapter first sound movie serial, King of the Kongo.
•  Recently, Boy Scout Troop #108 spent the day in Beech Grove, cleaning up litter and cutting weeds behind the Senior Center at Main and 6th St. Good to hear about the positive things young people are doing in our community.
•  Teacher’s Treasures on the east side recently received a huge donation of things to help at-risk kids get ready for school. Managed Health Services gathered up file folders, water bottles, pencils, notebooks, and much more.
•  The Auxiliary to Community Hospital East, 1500 N. Ritter Ave., will sponsor a Masquerade $5 Jewelry and Accessories sale around the clock beginning Tuesday, July 22 at 8 p.m. and ending Thursday, July 24 at 3 p.m. The sale will be held in the breezeway near the hospital main lobby. Quality books and gifts will be available at up to 70 percent off retail price. The proceeds will benefit hospital programs/services. Payment by cash, credit/debit and payroll deduction.  For more information, please contact Volunteer Services at 355-5120.
•  Many east side neighborhoods have been hosting rolling roll calls for IMPD to help show their support and to increase police visibility in the area. If your neighborhood organization wants to host a rolling roll call,  please get in touch with Steve Talley via e-mail at Steve.Talley@indy.gov.
