All of the city is celebrating the Tech Titan’s IHSAA 4A Basketball Championship victory on March 29th. After 102 years, the Tech Men in Green put that Championship trophy in the Arsenal fieldhouse trophy case. Because of a really tough and bleak winter, everyone in Indianapolis was looking for some good news and was excited about the success of Coach Jason Delaney and his Titan basketball team. In the final game, everybody in the city was a Tech alum and all of us shared the joy as we watched the young champions hoist the trophy above their heads. It had been 30 years since a city school had claimed a state championship; the Broad Ripple Rockets were the 1980 state champs. The Titans were runner-up to the Michigan City Elston Red Devils in 1966 and hadn’t had a shot since then, so it’s been a long road to victory. After dominating the first half, the Titans saw Lake Central rally in the second half to pull within three points of the Green Machine 59-62. With 10.9 seconds left, senior forward Trey Lyles sank 1 of 2 from the free throw line to give the Titans an insurmountable 4 point lead. Nobody who saw the game will ever forget it. The Tech Titans find themselves as the number 7 ranked high school basketball team in the nation in the prestigious MAXPREPs final poll of the 2013-14 season — Congratulations!
Tech’s State Championship Rally will be held for the community on Tuesday, April 8 at 6 p.m. in the West Gym of Tech. The school is at 1500 E. Michigan St. Everyone is welcome to come out and celebrate Tech’s victory. (more photos page A6)
