LAWRENCE — The staff and Friends of Fort Harrison State Park will host the Barton Rogers Big Band concert at the Sledding Hill at Fort Harrison State Park on July 27 from 7:30 p.m. – 8:15 p.m. This performance will highlight jazz and swing band music from the ‘30’s and ‘40’s to the present day.
Swing bands were common at Fort Harrison through its history in Indianapolis. The Fort hosted any number of bands as part of dances, dinners and holiday events during both peace and war.
The Barton Rogers Big Band has performed for five years at Fort Harrison State Park and is made up of amateur, military and professional musicians from central Indiana. The Barton Rogers Band has been performing in Indianapolis for over 50 years. The Band is made up of over 40 wind and percussion musicians.
This band concert is a free outdoor event. Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather including a light jacket, and bug spray. The concert will be held on the park Sledding Hill and features open seating. Concert participants are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair, snacks, and water. Pets and small children are welcome.
There is no cost to attend the program, but the normal IDNR entrance fee applies: $5 per instate carload, $7 per out-of-state carload. The program will be cancelled in the event of rain or severe weather.
