From The Indianapolis Star, Wednesday, March 26, 1913: Many persons may have perished in the flood that swept West Indianapolis early last evening after the White River levee at Morris St. was breached. Cries of help heard from men, women, and children trapped when the river burst from its banks and surrounded their homes suddenly became hushed as though overwhelmed by the oncoming water. Bitter wind lashed the overflow into a torrent and the intense cold makes rescue extremely hazardous. Hourly reports from the rescue parties are strengthening the belief of a great loss of life. The entire city has had gas and telephone service interrupted and there is no city water. The power station generators are under water and it is unknown when street car and traction service will resume.
