• The 2014 Feast of Lanterns was well attended on Aug. 23, but Mother Nature didn’t exactly cooperate! A big “Thank You” should go out to all the volunteers and organizers who made the event possible. The Feast is truly a neighborhood-driven event that makes the east side unique.
• Indianapolis Public Schools, STEMNASIUM LEARNING Academy and K12 Mobility will team up for Code for the USA at Arsenal Technical High School on Aug. 30 at 10 a.m. Students from IPS’ four STEM-oriented schools; Arsenal Technical High School, Harshman Magnet Middle School, Thomas D. Gregg Elementary School 15 and Washington Irving Elementary School 14 will participate. Over the course of the day students will learn how to create mobile apps similar to Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja and Temple Run. Students will also brainstorm, build, submit and market Android and iOS applications. At the end of the event students will be encouraged to apply what they learned by further developing and customizing their own app. The public can attend this challenge, so let’s support our tech-savvy kids! Tech High School is located at 1500 E. Michigan St.
• Beech Grove will have a public hearing on the 2015 city budget on Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 802 Main St. Citizens are encouraged to attend; visit www.beechgrove.com for online copies of the budget and more information.
• The East 10th Street Civic Association is looking for “Seasoned Artists” (ages 55+) to participate in their September IDADA First Friday show. If you or someone you know would like to showcase your work to the community, please contact Brianna VanValin bvanvalin@civicassoc.org
• State Representative Dan Forestal will host a Day in the District on Sept. 5 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Jockamo, 5646 E. Washington St. Forestal will be on hand to take questions and hear ideas.
• The City of Lawrence hosts a Friday at the Fort event on Sept. 5 from 4:30-8 p.m. at Lawrence Village Plaza, 9230 Memorial Park Dr. (off 56th St.). There are bands, food trucks, and a beer tent.
