Michelle Fife is has been making pine needle baskets since 2011, and explains that this type of basketry is shared by women all over the globe. Gullah women from coastal areas of the U.S. use sweetgrass, native to the area to form baskets that is an art form directly tied to West African traditions. Michelle’s work is made from 14-24 inch needs from the long leaf pine, which she patiently coils and stitches onto dried gourds or other materials. She is also a member of the Indiana Gourd Society, and has won many awards at the Indiana State Fair. Each one takes hours to make, and each one is different. She has been showing her works at the Gathering since the beginning of the show, and her pieces are truly one-of-a-kind. She also makes beautiful ornaments.
Admission is free, and everyone is welcome.
