INDIANAPOLIS — At 6:55 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18 Indianapolis Fire Department firefighters had their work cut out for them after heavy fire broke out in a vacant building at 5239 E. Washington St., the former site of a tire store. Several 911 callers reported heavy fire and smoke coming from the structure. On arrival, neighbors told IFD that squatters occupy the building on a routine basis and they believed were the cause for the fire.
Firefighters were told that unaccounted for squatters might still be inside, and they conducted a hasty search of the building, and found no one.
Firefighters battled the stubborn blaze for 4 hours and 20 minutes before marking it under control and another 30 to mark the fire out.
Flames could be seen for blocks around the site, and heavy smoke kept residents closest to it indoors.
Freezing conditions and snow, made for slick surfaces, tools and frozen gear. There were no firefighter injuries. IFD Fire Investigators are conducting an investigation. 1 residence to the rear of the structure lost power and IFD Victims Assistance was on scene helping with shelter.
