INDIANAPOLIS — October marks the beginning of respiratory illness season, when cases of flu, COVID and RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) typically increase. To help protect the health of residents and the community, the Marion County Public Health Department is offering vaccines for these viruses by appointment at its district health offices and ACTION Health Center.
Although respiratory infections can occur at any time of year, fall and winter are traditionally when these viruses circulate most frequently. They can cause a range of illnesses from a minor cold to severe pneumonia. Staying up to date on the vaccines that protect against these viruses is the best way for people to protect themselves and others.
Appointments for the vaccine are made by contacting the clinics directly. Information on locations, hours and phone numbers for district health offices and ACTION Health Center is available at MarionHealth.org/immunize or by calling MCPHD’s immunization program at (317) 221-2122.
Most vaccine from the Marion County Public Health Department is offered at no cost or a reduced cost. Questions can be directed to MCPHD’s immunization program.
The seasonal influenza vaccine is recommended for all individuals aged 6 months and older. This vaccine has particular importance for those at high risk of complications.
COVID remains a health threat and the vaccine has proven to reduce the severity of illness and prevent both hospitalizations and deaths. COVID-19 vaccine is available to anyone who wants it for themselves or their children.
RSV vaccine is recommended to protect infants, some young children, and adults who are older or have certain risk factors that increase the risk for severe RSV.
Vaccines for flu, COVID-19 and RSV help reduce the burden of illnesses, hospitalizations and deaths on the health care system each year. Individuals who have questions about vaccines are encouraged to consult their primary care physician or medical provider first.
