INDIANAPOLIS — The City-County Council’s passed the $1.7 billion 2026 City-County Operating Budget and $20 million Fiscal Package on Monday, Oct. 6. The 2026 Budget Package funds critical investments in public safety, infrastructure, economic development, housing, and quality of life. The vote was 17-8, with 6 Republicans and 2 Democrats voting against.
Highlights of the 2026 Budget include continued support for the City’s Gun Violence Reduction Strategy, first implemented in January 2022. Since then, Indianapolis has seen a nearly 50% decrease in criminal homicides and a 40% decline in nonfatal shootings. The 2026 Budget also fully funds IMPD staffing. Indianapolis Fire Department staffing is also fully funded along with a new Station 33 on the northwest side.
The budget includes investments to lay the foundation for an additional $100 million in annual road funding beginning in 2027.
The 2026 budget funds efforts that are part of the City’s comprehensive approach to improving housing stability. There will be $10.25 million budgeted for homelessness, which includes funding the second phase of the Streets to Home Indy strategy, a rapid rehousing initiative that aims to end chronic homelessness.
