Applause!: July 18-24

•  The July 22 meeting of the Perry Township / Southport Historical Society features Danny Russel, a professional actor portraying Abe Lincoln.  Join us as Indiana’s favorite son shares hilarity, heartbreak and humanity during his astonishing journey from a log cabin to the White House. The Franklin Township and Beech Grove Historical Societies are joining us for this event, which is free and open to the public. The meeting will be at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, July 22, in the Perry Township Academic Center, 2115 E. Southport Road. (This is the former Gerdt Furniture building next to the railroad). Use the front entrance.  Additional parking is available in the lots on the side and behind the building.
• The former mayor of Lawrence recently passed away. Robert Sterrett was mayor from 1984-1987 and was lauded by current Mayor Deb Whitfield: “His work contributed to our city’s long-term stability and demonstrated a commitment to public service through thoughtful governance and support for neighborhood development.”
• The Indiana Brewer’s Cup winners were announced recently. Sun King won for the Indiana Brewery of the Year and Grand Champion Brewery of the Year. Home brewer Matthew Mead was honored as the Amateur Grand Champion of the Year. Congratulations to them all for their talent and hard work.
• On Friday, July 18 from 9 p.m.-3 a.m., INDOT is closing the right lane of 56th St./Shadeland for working on overhead signage. Also on Friday, the left lane of I-70 eastbound and westbound will be closed near Arlington Ave. from 8 p.m.-4 a.m.
• Irvington Library, 5515 E. Washington St., will host an Animal Meet and Greet on Tuesday, July 22 from 6-7 p.m. Everyone is invited to meet up to three animals at a casual drop-in session presented by Silly Safaris.
• There will be a Lawrence Back-to-School celebration on Sunday, July 20 from noon-2 p.m. at Alexander Park, 4902 Charney Ave. A free backpack give-away will be happening, as well as resources and information for families and students.
• According to Safe Streets Indy, there were 10 incidents reported for the week of July 7-13 in the city. Eight pedestrians were hit by vehicles, and two bicyclists. One incident is fatal. The city has seen too many people injured or killed in these accidents. To see a map of where these incidents have occurred, visit indypedcrisis.info Many of them are downtown, but there are concentrations at many east side intersections.
• Holy Cross Catholic Church is holding a Wine and Cheese Festival on Saturday, July 26 from 4-9 p.m. Tickets are available online at indyholycross.org/festival/ and range in price from $10 for a kid’s zone all access pass, to a sommelier experience for $50, to the Mac-N-Cheese throwdown with local chefs with samples and judging for $40, there’s something for everyone. The festival will be held at Sturm and Arsenal. There will also be food trucks, local vendors, and much more.
