Applause!: Jan. 10 & 17

Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be celebrated on Monday, January 20. Federal, state and local government offices will be closed. Post offices will be closed, and no mail will be delivered except Priority Mail Express. All locations of the Indianapolis Public Library will be closed. There will be no trash pickup Monday, and collection will be on a sliding schedule.

• A big thank-you needs to go out to the hard-working plow drivers and salters that tried to keep up with the most recent snows. It is a thankless task, with long hours and hazardous conditions. Also, a big thank-you goes out to our First Responders who helped people get out of deep snow and kept working despite the conditions.
• IF Theatre was awarded with a certificate of appreciation by the City of Indianapolis for the IndyFringe Festival’s 20th Anniversary. The festival has blossomed into a year-round theatre organization that has produced some great work by local writers and actors.
• City streets are a complete mess, with potholes springing up like crazy. Please report them to the city by calling the Mayor’s Action Line, 317-327-4622 or online at indy.gov/activity/pothole-repair. If you encounter potholes on I-65, I-70, or 465, Indiana Dept. of Transportation is responsible for repairs, and you can report it at www,indot4u.com or call 855-463-6848.
• The Indianapolis Home Show will be held Jan. 17-26 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, 1200 E. 38th St. in the West Pavilion and Expo Hall. Tickets are $7.50 for adults, $3 for kids 6-12. There will be lots of vendors, and the Centerpiece Home by Davis Homes is a must-see. You can get tickets online at indianapolishomeshow.mpetickets.com
• On Jan. 10, there was a big fire on the south side next to Garfield Brewing and Helm Coffee a couple blocks north of Garfield Park. Both businesses sustained damage, and they have promised to reopen as soon as possible. No one was injured in the blaze.
• If you are able, please clear the sidewalks in front of your home or business. With over 3 1/2 inches of snow Jan. 10 piled on top of the 7+  inches earlier, the accumulation is creating a hazardous situation for pedestrians who are forced to walk in the street and are waiting at bus stops.
• Nickolas Williams has been named as Executive Vice President of Institutional Advancement at Martin University. He has over 18 years of experience in fundraising, development, and leadership across several fields.
• Continuing the surge of interest in women’s sports in the city, Indy Ignite professional women’s volleyball team has launched their first season at the Fishers Event Center, 11000 Stockdale St. Their next at-home game is Sunday, Feb. 2 when they play against the Columbus Fury at 6 p.m. To get tickets and schedule, visit provolleyball.com/teams/indy-ignite
• The City of Lawrence has a free sled library at the Community Park Sledding Hill at 5301 N. Franklin Rd. It is on the honor system — just return to the box at the top of the hill. This is a great idea and very handy!
• The Weekly View didn’t publish last week due to getting snowed in at home. We’ve only done that once before in our 16 years of publishing! We celebrated our 16th Anniversary on Jan. 12!
