INDIANAPOLIS — Demolition is planned for the historic former Marion County Jail, city officials recently announced. Marion County Jail 1’s demolition will begin by end of the year.
The jail was closed after the opening of the Community Justice Campus in the Twin-Aire neighborhood in 2022. Inmates moved to the new facility, where the courts also moved.
During the demolition, pedestrian and road restrictions along Alabama and Maryland Streets will remain in place. The demolition and restrictions are under close work from the city and demolition crews to ensure that they do not interfere with the WNBA All-Star festivities taking place in July.
The removal of the building from 40 S. Alabama will open new opportunities for redevelopment of the area, according to officials. Nearby, the Federal Aviation Administration has green-lit the closing of the Indianapolis Heliport, with potential redevelopment as a stadium for major league soccer.
Internal work to prepare for Jail 1’s demolition resulted in 695 tons of internal infrastructure being removed to date. In total, the demolition costs nearly $4 million.
