INDIANAPOLIS — The City of Indianapolis and Citizens Energy Group have announced a close coordination to replace lead service lines in conjunction with the Department of Public Works’ conversion of East Michigan an New York streets to two-way traffic.
The conversion project will convert Michigan St. between College Ave. and Ellenberger Parkway Dr., and New York St. between College Ave. and East Pleasant Run Parkway N. Dr. from one-way to two-way traffic. Several neighborhoods will be affected by the change, including Arsenal Heights, Woodruff Place, Tuxedo Park, Emerson Heights, Englewood, and Bosart-Brown.
Along with Citizens replacing lead service lines during construction, neighborhoods will also see improvements to existing sidewalks along the streets, ADA compliant ramps, crosswalks, and rail line enhancements. There will also be resurfacing on the streets.
Citizens Energy Group noted that homes and businesses built and connected to the water system before 1950 may have lead water service lines (the line connecting the main to the building). They estimate that between 55,000-75,000 homes and businesses may have lead service lines and/or lead plumbing.
