INDIANAPOLIS — City officials joined Indy Parks Director Phyllis Boyd and stakeholders recently to break ground on the new environmental community center and playground at Grassy Creek Regional Park.
Using Circle City Forward and Lilly Endowment funding, the new environmental community center will be built with multipurpose rooms for educational activities and community use. A new entrance to the park will be built on German Church Road, and new trails will enhance connectivity to the larger park. There are also plans to build new picnic areas, a playground, and a boardwalk over the Grassy Creek Wetland. Grassy Creek Regional Park
Grassy Creek Park is located at the intersection of E. 30th Street and N. German Church Rd. The park was established in 2006. Formerly known as the German Church and 30th Park, the park is 175 acres of mixed-use land. Grassy Creek bisects the middle of the property, from north to south. The area provides habitat for many species of migratory and nesting birds, beaver, muskrat, fish, turtles, and frogs. Kept in a natural state, it provides an excellent location for nature education and is uniquely suited to passive recreational uses, such as hiking, picnicking and bird watching. Grassy Creek Regional Park is unusual in that it includes a portion of the environmentally significant Grassy Creek conservation corridor.
