INDIANAPOLIS — After five years of fundraising, many volunteer hours, and the support of over 500 individuals and organizations, Pathways over Pogue’s invites the public to celebrate the reopening of the historic Nowland Avenue Bridge inside Spades Park. The event will take place on Sunday, May 7 from 1-3 p.m. at the bridge, located just west of Rural and north of Brookside Parkway South Dr. Street parking will be available along Brookside Parkway North Dr.
The restoration of the bridge has also helped pave the way to complete the 5.3 mile Pogue’s Run Trail, which will cross directly over the bridge. Phase Two of the trail from Commerce to Olney should be completed by the end of the year.
The historic bridge is unique in that it is a Luten Arch, a curved steel rod and concrete design promoted by Daniel B. Luten of the National Bridge Co. The bridge was originally constructed in 1903. Over the years, the bridge fell into disuse and was considered unsafe until a grassroots effort was made to save the structure.
