Preparations Being Made for Snow Season

INDIANAPOLIS — Preparations are being made by the Indy Snow Force drivers ahead of this year’s winter season. Plow drivers have already completed more than 2,000 hours of training behind the wheel and in the classroom.
“Whether or not we see snow in the coming weeks, the Indianapolis DPW Snow Force is prepared,” said Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett. “That means over 100 vehicles and almost 300 technicians are ready to report when the weather gets bad. When they do, they’ll follow a strategy that ensures more Indianapolis residents—and visitors—can get to where they’re going.”
Indy Snow Force executed their annual “mock snow fight” before the first winter weather event of the year hits Indianapolis.
Indy DPW has continued investing in new equipment in recent years, including the addition of four new trucks in 2021.
Indy Snow Force reported having more than 18,000 tons of salt on hand ready to help make roads safer and keep Indianapolis moving. Indy DPW uses a granular de-icing “salt” product which lowers the freezing point of water on roadways and which is designed to stick to streets once distributed by plow trucks.
Indy DPW is currently hiring for various full-time positions within its operations and solid waste divisions, including positions that involve driving snow trucks. More info on open positions can be found at joinDPW.indy.gov.
Residents can stay up to date on Indy Snow Force efforts during winter weather events online at indy.gov/dpw and on Twitter by following @IndySnowForce. The Indy Snow Force Viewer will also be used throughout the season, showing where roads along standard routes have been recently plowed or treated with salt.
