• The dates for the Irvington Ghost Tours have been announced! Beginning Friday, Sept. 30 through Saturday, Oct. 29, tours start at 7 p.m. at 10 South Johnson Ave. Tickets are $20 each (cash only) and include a book while supplies last. Al Hunter and his merry band of helpers take everyone on a long walk through the haunted mysteries of Irvington on Friday and Saturday nights only. Wear good shoes and be prepared to walk a distance. Proceeds from the tours go to support local Irvington charities. Readers of this paper know what a great storyteller Al is, so start making plans with friends and family now! This is the 20th Anniversary Tour!
• The second annual Blues & BBQ on 38th will be held on Saturday, Aug. 27 from 2-7 p.m. at the National building, at E. 38th and between Delaware and N. Washington Blvd. The Governor Davis Band returns along with new blues bands. Food to purchase includes Hank’s Smoke Briskets and Pa & Ma’s Backyard BBQ. Beer provided by Upland Brewing. Admission is free, and it is a family friendly event.
• Looking forward to IndyFringe’s shows coming up Thursday-Sunday! Check out Sing Down the Moon: Appalachia Wonder tales Saturday, Aug. 27 at 1:45 p.m. at Athenaeum, with great music and good stories. Or if magic is more your speed, Taylor Martin’s Indy Magic Presents The Session on the 27th at 5:15 at the District Theatre, and on Sunday, Aug. 28, take in a performance by Beyond Ballet at noon at the Athenaeum. There are lots of shows for every taste and interest, so visit indyfringe.org to check out the schedule.
• The free lunch waiver program has been closed by Congress, and beginning now families must apply and qualify for free and reduced meals based on income guidelines. Apply online at www.schoolcafe.com or on a paper application available at the school.
• Speaking of food programs, we’re very proud that our friends at Neighborhood Food Cooperative (NFC) have been very busy helping our eastsiders in need of food assistance. They are maintaining food boxes at these locations: 30 N Audubon Circle (UMC), Community Hospital at16th and Ritter, Downey Street Christian Church at 111 S. Downey Ave., Irvington Books and Vinyl at the corner of Bonna and S. Audubon, Arlington and Beechwood, and Emerson Avenue Baptist Church at Emerson and Michigan. If you can, please make a donation of canned or nonperishable food items in one of the boxes. They also provide a food giveaway on the third Sunday of the month at Irvington Plaza 2-4 p.m. The next one is slated for Sept. 18. This is an extension of the Gaia Works, ICAN Assistance, and Big Red food box.
• There will be an electronics recycling day at Northminster Presbyterian Church on Saturday, Aug. 27 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Northminster is asking for a $10 donation for large items such as TVs and air conditioners, with all proceeds going to support RecycleForce. The church is located at 1660 Kessler Blvd. in Broad Ripple.
