INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Department of Public Works recently began on the final phase of more than $5 million in structural improvements along Delaware Street in the downtown Mile Square. This work continues improvements that began last summer to provide full-depth reconstruction of Delaware Street, along with dedicated IndyGo bus lanes and two new Super Stop locations. Traffic will see lane restrictions from Washington to Ohio Streets through early summer when Delaware Street is expected to fully reopen.
Traffic will be restricted to two lanes on the east side of Delaware Street between Maryland and Washington Streets before shifting to the westernmost lanes after Washington Street. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained through the intersection with Wabash Street with normal traffic patterns resuming at Ohio Street northward.
This work will also include closing the sidewalk on the east side of Delaware Street from just north of East Market to Wabash Streets for replacement.
Northbound pedestrians will be directed to use East Market, Alabama and Wabash Streets to rejoin with Delaware Street, while those traveling south should follow Wabash, Alabama and East Market Streets.
When complete, Delaware Street will feature a newly rebuilt and resurfaced roadway between Maryland and Vermont Streets with dedicated bus lanes and pavement markings, as well as new sidewalks and ADA-compliant ramps in select locations.
When Delaware Street is fully complete, the contractor plans to begin work this summer on the two-way conversion of Fort Wayne Avenue. Improvements include sidewalk and ADA ramp repairs, street milling and resurfacing and traffic signal installation. The newly converted Fort Wayne Avenue is expected to reopen later this year.
