• The Kan-Kan Cinema and the neighbors around them have been working with muralist Shamira Wilson and Interaction Design Lab, Rhokh over the last few months to reimagine the intersection at Windsor and Commerce. They have settled on three potential installations and are asking everyone to stop by the Spades Park Library, the Kan-Kan, or Amelia’s by April 8 to vote for your favorite designs.
• Southwest District IMPD Commander Tanya Terry recently graduated from the FBI National Academy. She joined the force in 1999 and served in the North District, as well as Northwest. She was raised on the east side and graduated from Warren Central.
• Check out the photographic exploration of the Pennsy Trail at the Irvington Historical Society’s exhibit More Than a Trail . . . Pennsy on Sunday, April 1, from 1-4 p.m. at the Bona Thompson Center, 5350 University Ave. Admission is free, but a donation is appreciated.
• The Fort Ben branch of the Indianapolis Public Library will host a groundbreaking event on Thursday, April 7 at 11 a.m. at the site on the corner of 56th and Meiner. Parking will be available along Otis and Meiner. This is a very exciting development for Lawrence, and the northeast side in general!
• Speaking of Otis Ave. in Lawrence, it will be closed for about a month due to IndyGo’s Purple Line project. You can still access the businesses on Otis if you follow the detour signs.
• This year, it seems there’s a lot more litter than usual, especially on our greenways and trails. If you frequent the trails (Pennsy, Monon, Pleasant Run, etc.) it would be a kind gesture to bring a trash back and collect what you can and dispose of it properly. In addition, we’re seeing more trash being dumped illegally. Please report illegal dumping to the Mayor’s Action Line, Call 317-327-4622 or visit maps.indy.gov/RequestIndy/
• Irvington Presbyterian Church Justice Advocacy Team and the Irvington branch of IPL are co-sponsoring a book study all of April on the book Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America by Barbara Ehrenriech, which explores the challenges of the working poor in our country. Discussions with social worker Holly Pittman will be held April 5, 12, and 19 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the library, The library is located at 5625 E. Washington St.
