INDIANAPOLIS — Adults are invited to celebrate stories that have been revived, reimagined and retold and to participate in a variety of special programming during The Indianapolis Public Library’s 2019 Adult Summer Reading Program, “Favorite Fiction: Rebooted,” continuing through August at Library and community locations.
Summer readers can visit the Library to check out a retold story from a selected book list of 15 titles available in print and electronic formats. Titles include Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi, based on African mythology; Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman; Unbury Carol by Josh Malerman, based on Sleeping Beauty; and Mycroft Holmes: A Novel by Kareem Abdul Jabbar, based on Sherlock Holmes.
The Adult Summer Reading Program’s signature event is an appearance by bestselling author Madeline Miller on Sunday, June 23 at 2 p.m. at Central Library, 40 E. St. Clair Street. She will discuss her mythological retelling, Circe, which is on the summer reading list, as well as her other bestseller, The Song of Achilles. Book sales and signings will follow the program.
Other activities include book discussions, writing workshops presented by the Indiana Writers Center, and altered-book poetry programs presented by the Indianapolis Art Center. Also, individual programs will be presented on mythology and fairytale trivia, a theatre retelling workshop and book discussion, and a flash fiction workshop with speculative fiction authors.
Those attending any Adult Summer Reading Program event will receive a raffle entry for a grand prize basket of goodies featuring Gen Con passes, gift certificates, and a signed copy of Circe by Madeline Miller. Individuals can stop by their local IndyPL branch to pick up a “Favorite Fiction: Rebooted” tote bag, while supplies last, and receive a raffle entry with the bag. No registration is necessary to participate.
