Great Indy Cleanup Focuses on Christian Park

INDIANAPOLIS — Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. (KIB), in partnership with the City of Indianapolis, kicked off the Great Indy Cleanup on April 6 in neighborhoods all across Indianapolis. Large cleanups are planned throughout the city in four different quadrants aimed to achieve a more connected and healthy city through neighborhood-driven greening initiatives.
KIB and the Mayor’s Office of Business and Neighborhood Services, with support from the Department of Public Works, are coordinating with neighborhood associations and groups across the city to organize cleanup efforts during the month of April and continuing through October.
A large-scale beautification day is planned for April 27 in the My Christian Park neighborhood, with KIB leading more than 400 volunteers, to care for the area surrounding Christian Park. In addition to the full-on beautification effort, My Christian Park Neighborhood will announce the addition of a public art initiative that will serve as a gateway between Christian Park and Twin Aire neighborhood. Two murals (pending approval from CSX) will be painted on the underpass on English Ave. between Pleasant Run Parkway North Dr. and LaSalle Ave. Local artist Kristopher May will guide a team of volunteers to paint the murals, which depict the Christian Park Family Center, the Florence Fay School Senior Apartments, Sports in the Park, the city skyline, and Pleasant Run trail and waterway.
On KIB Cleanup Day from 8 a.m.-noon, hundreds of volunteers will converge on Christian Park to plant 87 trees and a native planting garden in the park, remulch area playgrounds and gardens, and paint the murals, while residents and other volunteers pick up trash from the streets and alleys. The Mayor will be on hand to make a special announcement about My Christian Park Neighborhood.
On April 13, efforts will be concentrated on the Westside, Downtown, north up to Fall Creek. The area includes Herron Morton Place, The Valley, Haughville, Kennedy King, Speedway, and White River.
On April 20, the North/Northeast area will get attention, including Watson Park, Butler Tarkington, Millersville at Fall Creek, Meridian Kessler, and Nora.
On April 27, it will be all hands on deck on the Eastside, including Brookside, Little Flower, Woodruff Place, Warren, CAFE, and Otterbein.
