• Congratulations to Scecina Ladies for their softball championship when they beat Adams Central 4-2. They are the Class 2A champs. Very proud of you!
• Race for Roofs is a 5 Mile Run Walk that raises funds for rental scholarships for eastsiders who need assistance with housing. The race, sponsored by Englewood Community Development Corporation, begins June 22 at 8 a.m. at Englewood Christian Church, 57 N. Rural St. Team registration is $30, individual registration is also $30. Last year’s run was a huge success, and helped many people. • If you like classic films, especially sci-fi films from the 50s, don’t miss Vintage Movie Night at the Garfield Park Arts Center, 2432 Conservatory Dr., on June 15 at 8 p.m. They’ll be showing The Day the Earth Stood Still, staring Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, and Gort, the robot. Admission is $4 at the door. “Klaatu barada nikto.”
• As we head into the “dog days” of summer, just a gentle reminder to NOT leave your dog in the car on warm days. Remember that dogs can’t sweat and shed excess heat the way humans do, and it doesn’t take much time at all for a dog to be overcome with heat. Dogs with pug-like faces are especially vulnerable, so just leave Phydo at home in the air conditioning. They’ll pout, but they’ll get over it.
• The Fathers and Families Center honors four outstanding dads at the 9th annual Faces of Fatherhood luncheon June 14. Craig Messenger, Bruce Wright, Hollis Peeler, and Gregory Wallace are this year’s honorees.
• EclecticPond recently announced its third season line-up, which sounds incredibly exciting. They’ll be at the Fringe Festival Aug. 16-25 performing in Shakespeare Wrote That?. In September, they’ll be doing R & J, and in December they are reviving and revamping 10 x 10. They’ll produce Comedy of Errors Feb. 28-March 15, and the Young Shakespeare Project April 11-26. For summer, we can look forward to the original game of thrones, in the Wars of the Roses. What fun!
• East side neighbors are invited to volunteer June 15 from 9 a.m.-noon at Fletcher Park at the corner of Brookside/12th/Arsenal as the Windsor Park Neighborhood Association begins to install the border fencing. Bring your work gloves and come help out on a great beautification project in a terrific neighborhood.
• Love it now that the county fairs are beginning (see the Marion County Fair story on page 1). Then there’s the Hancock County Fair in Greenfield June 21- 28, the Shelby County Fair July 7-15, and the Hamilton County Fair July 18-23. • Tech Alumni Day was Saturday, June 8th and a dedication ceremony was held at the Veterans Memorial that honored all Tech students who served in any branch of the United States Armed Forces. This permanent memorial is just to the east of the Arsenal on campus.
