Irvington Summer Music Series Celebrates Jazz, Rock, Punk and Folk

IRVINGTON — The 2018 Irvington Summer Music Series features such a variety that music lovers of all ages and interests will not be disappointed with a stop in this popular eclectic neighborhood sometime this summer.
Ten musical concerts, two each month from May through September, will be featured at various locations around Irvington. The Irvington Community Council, in partnership with various organizations and businesses, has designed a mix of musical styles and genres that includes rock & roll, jazz, gospel, classical, folk, punk and world music.
Highlights for the 2018 schedule include:
• Sun., May 13th:  A performance of Classical Indian music for sitar and tabla at 4:30 PM, the historic Bona Thompson Center, 5350 University Ave.. Tickets are $10 on Eventbrite, or $12 at the door.
• Sat., May 26th:  The Vulgar Boatmen in concert. The legendary John Sheets will open. The how starts at 7 at Coal Yard Coffee, 5547 Bonna  Ave. Admission is free but donations accepted.
• Sat. June 2nd:  The 6th Annual Children’s Festival at 11 a.m., at the Irvington Public Library with music and events for the entire family. The library is located on the corner of East Washington and Audubon.
• Sat., July 28th: Celebrate the music of Nobel Prize winner Bob Dylan with a performance by The Charlie Ballantine Group, joined by Jeff Kelly & Graveyard Shift at  7 p.m., Irvington Ice & Coal, 400 S. Ritter Ave. Tickets are $10 on Eventbrite or $12 at the door.
• Sun., August 5th: The White River Jazz Band will serenade the sweet tooth crowd at the Irvington Historical Society’s Ice Cream Social at the Bona Thompson Center, 5350 University Ave.
• Sat., August 25th: In partnership with the Central Indiana Folk Music and Mountain Dulcimer Society, there will be a Celebration of the Dulcimer, a day long series of performances and workshops culminating with a performance by hammer dulcimer master Ted Yoder at the Irvington Presbyterian Church, 55 Johnson Ave.
• Sat., September 8th: The Carmel Quartet will perform an evening concert of chamber music at 7 p.m. at the Bona Thompson Center. Tickets are $10 on Eventbrite or $12 at the door.
• Friday September 21st: The best in progressive bluegrass music from Flatland Harmony Experiment will be at Coal Yard Coffee. Show starts at 7 p.m. and is a free concert.
Other shows throughout the summer include a bluegrass showcase event June 30, a punk rock show July 15.
