INDIANAPOLIS — On Dec. 11, Mayor Joe Hogsett, City-County Councillor Blake Johnson, and members of the Christian Park neighborhood held a ceremonial kick-off to demolition and environmental remediation activities on the former Naples Bulk Oil Storage/Kiel Bros. Oil Company site. The structures being demolished include six aboveground storage tanks and one underground storage tank, which were previously used to store up to 1.3 million gallons of oil and fuel, as well as a dilapidated building, equipment, and debris.
Once an active business serving the rail line, the structures and oil storage tanks currently blighting the Christian Park neighborhood have been vacant and abandoned for over ten years. In addition to being an eyesore, near eastside neighbors are concerned about the potential environmental impact and safety hazards. The structures have been subject to crime, violence, and reoccurring police and emergency response requests. Following demolition, the site will be remediated to residential standards and marketed for redevelopment.
